Stress-free Fantasy Hockey Drafting for Beginners

2009 NHL Draft PortraitsThere are a couple of things that make drafting easy without having to put a ton of time into prepping. Follow these guidelines and you’ll coast through draft day with confidence.

#1 – Trust the Rankings

Don’t feel like you are doing anything wrong by picking players by the rankings. The highest ranked players are up top for a reason: they are the best players. Those players will go first, so get on the boat and pick top players with your top picks.

#2 – Don’t Trust the Rankings

Don’t rely on the rankings to put a good team together for you. Although the best players are ranked the highest, it doesn’t take into consideration many factors, such as where they are playing. John Tavares might be the best thing since sliced bread, but he may struggle to put up really big points on the worst performing team in the league. Also make sure to vary what teams your players are on. Yes the Red Wings rule, but no, it isn’t good to have an all Hockeytown roster.

#3 – Don’t Hate the Player, Hate the Game

It’s important to make sure you don’t balk under the pressure of your draft. Don’t second guess your picks or strategy. Your fellow drafters will talk smack. Don’t pay any attention to it. The most common smack perpetuated is along the lines of, “wow, that’s happening,” or noting your questionable picks. They’re haters. Do you.

Keep these things in mind, and one last piece of advice for the 2009-2010 FHL season: don’t forget to set your lines every day!
