UPDATE: Meet Howler’s replacement!
Remember Howler? Of course not. He was the mascot for the Avalanche starting in 1997 and has since been retired. For all of you fans who have been yearning for a new mascot, you’d better buy your tickets to the 10/3 game against the Canucks where the team is planning to unveil a new costumed cheerleader.
It’s anyone’s guess as to what we’ll see. There has been no mention of him/her/it anywhere except (from what I’ve seen) on the pre-game jumbotron teasers at the Pepsi Center and even that mention was short and almost forgettable.
Some ideas on what Howler’s replacement could be:
- Howler! Why did we get rid of him in the first place? I’m sure he’d be ruined updated somehow, but Howler really took away the need for die hard fans to explain the foot logo to their girlfriends.
- Keeping with the “avalanche” motif, a St. Bernard comes to mind. You know, those friendly dogs seen in old cartoons with a barrel of booze around their necks that search for and rescue lost skiers and hikers in the frozen tundra.
- Kind of a stretch, but some sort of prospector/cowboy character is a possibility that had to have been talked about (and hopefully not used). Colorado loves its western roots and will jump at any opportunity to tell you all about it.
What are you ideas or wishes for a new Avalanche mascot? Are you nostalgically dreaming of the shaggy days of Howler? Is there a better way to represent the Avs? Let us know in the comments.
UPDATE: The Avs are offering $50 lower bowl seats for this game as a promo to see the new mascot, so just go here and use the promo code “MASCOT” to buy seats on the cheap.
